CHANGE

September 10th, 2007

There is nothing more constant in life than change.

However hard we try to keep things as they are, they just change.

Sometimes, the harder we try, the faster the change happens.

Other times, the tighter we hold on to it, the more it slips away.

In a highly transient place like Dubai, change is almost a way of life.

There are mornings when you wake up and realize that the road you take to work have completely changed.  It doesn’t simply divert you to a smaller dirt road but it is more often than not a totally different route! No wonder being late or lost is pretty much a good excuse with all the road works all around the city.  Obviously, this causes all the traffic and confusion on the roads.  So being stuck in traffic is a pretty good excuse too.

Look around and even the flowers that adorn the sidewalks have all been pulled to their roots awaiting for the garbage guys to collect.  Time to change the flowers to a different colour they fancy. (sigh)

Faces don’t remain familiar in this part of the world either.  That friendly counter staff at your favourite Laundromat would’ve changed in a month, if not maximum 8 months.  You could be lucky to know those very rare few that truly stay.

The city as a whole is becoming less and less familiar.  To think I have seen this place change….constantly… everyday for 17 years!!! It’s a bit tough to imagine what it was like before… and the people who used to be here.

Not surprisingly, It is a great effort to keep in touch with people.  People have come and have gone.  I guess it’s not unexpected that I have lost interest in really making an effort to keep in touch…to be friends… when I know that only 5% of those people will really stay or would themselves even bother. Sigh.

Change…. If only I can adapt in this fast-paced life without turning cold eventually…. I hope not.  Wouldn’t want that.

Gotta touch base with those that make life matter…those that make time slow… and remind me of the joys of living here. :p

It’s really weird to see it from your point of view because I’m just as weary to keep in touch having moved on and realised that no one else will be willing to make the effort. Being the person who left, and also the person who hasn’t made much of an effort… I guess all I can say is I don’t blame you. Because if I were you, I probably would do the exact same thing.

I have to admit though I’m so glad you guys have kept up your blogs, kasi it’s so nice to, not only read the thoughts of people I can relate to but especially to know that they’re the thoughts of people I actually know!! haha
