Pabasa

d2bc2849b3b1433f8e47a8b51ed8176f.jpgThe moment you read this, I will be participating in our yearly Pabasa.  Pabasa  is the traditional Filipino Lenten practice wherein we sing the Passion of Christ ( according to the Roman Catholic Bible) from beginning until end continuously.  Normally this starts at 3pm and ends around 6 or 7am the following day (depends on how fast or slow the tune used to sing, this may last longer).  We used to hold this every Maundy Thursdays but then when my mom became a lay minister and became active in church, we had to move it a week earlier as Holy Week is jam-packed for them. Traditionally, a cross or any other statue of Jesus that represents the Passion is placed on the altar where this is held with a candle lit up all throughout the Pabasa.  This is started from Holy Wednesday upto Good Friday non-stop.  Apparently, the start of Pabasa varies from region to region as mentioned in the explanation below.  As a penitence, we abstain from meat during this time.  A drink made of boiled ginger is served to soothe the throat from the non-stop singing.  The participants take turns in singing.  We believe that singing a prayer is equivalent to 2 or more said prayers.

SIDE NOTE::Anyway, funny, while I was looking for an online definition to this practice, I came across Wikifilipino.  Ang pinoy nga naman.  When there is Yahoo, we have Yehey.  When there is Wikipedia, there is Wikifilipino.  Well, I thought I share the definition they gave to you.  My apologies that it is not in English but in our native language of Tagalog.  I did search for an online translator like Babelfish to suggest here but couldn’t find one.

For now…. God bless all!  Be back soon!
